Halloween Pet Costumes

Because many people spend the weeks leading up to Halloween thinking about their own costumes, finding a Halloween costume for dogs and cats can often be a last-minute task. However, pet Halloween costumes are a creative way to spice up traditional Halloween activities.

Halloween Dog Costumes

While dog clothes are a fun way to dress up a dog year round, many retailers are creating dog Halloween costumes, some of which you can easily create at home for your dog at home. The following are a few ideas for easy, inexpensive dog costumes:

  • Devil: Get a devil-horned headband and tie a red cape or a red bandana around your dog”s neck.
  • Pirate: Tie a striped bandana or a bandana with a skull and cross bones around your dog”s neck. If your dog can tolerate it, put an eye patch on him.
  • Superman: Attach a patch with the Superman “S” on it to a red cape and tie it around your dog”s neck.

You can also include your dog in your or your children”s costumes by picking famous duos:

  • Dorothy and Toto
  • Batman and Robin
  • Peter Pan and Capt. Hook
  • Shaggy or Daphne and Scooby Doo
  • George or Jane Jetson and Astro

A Halloween costume for your dog not only adds fun to the holiday but can also double as a safety precaution. If your children are going trick-or-treating, your dog, as well as an adult, can accompany them, but be sure to provide the same safety precautions for your dog. Dogs in costume should have reflective tape and/or light colored elements to their Halloween ware so that they are visible to cars.

Halloween Cat Costumes

Most dog Halloween costumes can easily be adapted into cat Halloween costumes. Ideas that are based on collars, hats, or cape-like cat clothes generally work better and are more tolerable for your pet. Along with the dog costume ideas above, the following are some fun Halloween costumes for cats:

  • Angel: Put a headband with a halo and a collar with angel wings on your cat.
  • Court Jester: Cut out triangular fabric pieces and attach them to your cat”s collar. Attach bells to the ends of the triangles.
  • Reindeer: Put a headband with fake antlers on your cat and add some bells to its collar.

As with a dog, your cat can also be a part of your Halloween costume:

  • Witch with a cat
  • Batman and Catwoman
  • Mickey and Minnie Mouse
  • Jon and Garfield
  • Alice in Wonderland and the Cheshire Cat

While a cat will not be able to go trick-or-treating with children, a cat in a Halloween costume will be a fun welcome for the trick-or-treaters coming to your door. Your cat”s Halloween costume can also be a fun addition to a Halloween party for children and adults alike!

Other Halloween Pet Costumes

Although pet Halloween costumes are generally limited to dogs and cats, plenty of other animals that are not as easy to dress up can be included in your costume. Dress up as a pirate and put your parrot on your shoulder. If you dress up as Adam or Eve (with appropriately placed leaves, of course!), you can bring your snake with you. Or be Alice in Wonderland and take your white rabbit with you.

Pet Costumes Year Round

Halloween is not the only time of year to dress your pet in a costume. By carefully selecting your pet”s Halloween costume, you can have dog clothes or cat clothes suitable for multiple occasions.

Try a Santa or reindeer Halloween costume for your dog or cat. By the time Christmas rolls around, you will have a fun photo op for your Christmas cards or a fun guest for your Christmas party. You could also get a bow tie and top hat for your pet”s Halloween costume. Down the road, your dog might be asked to be a ring bearer at a wedding!

Regardless of your decision, Halloween costumes for pets can create many memorable holidays and other celebrations.
