18th Birthday

Turning 18 means entering into adulthood, but many teens are not truly ready for full adulthood at this point in life. Many are still living at home or living at college, which their parents often finance. Some teens even turn 18 while still in high school.

Still, that doesnt lessen the fact that an 18th birthday is an important milestone. Turning 18 means gaining the right to vote, get tattoos, get piercings and buy tobacco.

Piercings and Tattoos

While most teens arent jumping up and down to run out and vote or buy tobacco, the 18th birthday may be the day theyve been waiting for to get a piercing or tattoo that their parents wouldnt previously allow.

This may not be a thrilling prospect for the parents, but accepting that a teen is now permitted to make certain decisions for him or herself, and maybe even accompanying the teen to get the piercing or tattoo they so desire, will make for a memorable 18th birthday.

Teens at College

If a teen is living at school when their 18th birthday hits, that doesnt mean parents should neglect celebrating with their teen or doing something to make the day special and memorable.

Depending how far the parents live from the college in question, a visit may be an option. Taking the teen out for a nice dinner with a few of his or her new college friends is a great way to ring in an 18th birthday.

Should the college be across the country or if the parents schedule wont permit a visit, sending flowers or a care package will be appreciated.

Another great idea is sending money or a gift card to the teens favorite restaurant before the teens 18th birthday arrives so that the teen can treat all of their friends to a night out. Remind them to take a lot of pictures to send home so that you dont have to miss out on their 18th birthday completely.

Other 18th Birthday Party Ideas

Some clubs and casinos allow 18-year-olds to enter, so this may be something fun that a teen was not previously allowed to do. The only problem with this option arises if the teens friends have not all turned 18 yet. Leaving out friends on a birthday is no fun, so if the teen isnt the last of his or her friends to turn 18, choosing an activity that everyone can participate in will be more fun overall.

Road trips across the country or even just to the nearest tourist spot or national park can be a great 18th birthday activity with a few close friends. An activity like this will give a teen a sense of independence and can be a great way to relax and unwind.

Having a surprise party or just a regular birthday party at a house or restaurant can be a hit as well. Food, friends and fun can be the simplest and most effective way of celebrating an 18th birthday.

Friends and family can both be involved in this type of celebration, and if the teen wants, a theme can be adhered to in order to add another fun quality to the day.
