The Common Cold Prevention Immunity Boost

There’s one in every office, classroom or household: that one person who never seems to get sick. What’s their secret? A strong immune system is the best weapon against colds. There are several ways in which people can boost their natural immunity to prevent colds.

The easiest way to keep your immunity strong is to avoid germs. Researchers contend that a telephone receiver can have as many as 500 times more germs per inch than a toilet seat. Therefore, one way to avoid germs is to keep the phone clean. It helps to keep anti-bacterial wipes nearby, and to use them often. Germs can live up to 72 hours on a given surface.

Sneezes are another common source of germs. Particles from a sneeze can travel as far as a few feet. When covering your mouth from a sneeze it’s best to sneeze into your elbow, rather than your hand. Sometimes you can’t protect yourself from a sneeze, but frequent hand-washing will help to keep you from spreading the germs further.

Boost Your Immune System Through Exercise

Another way to strengthen your natural immunity is with exercise. However, studies have shown that you don’t need to exhaust yourself to get the immunity benefits of exercise.

A recent report found that after extreme training or competition, athletes are more likely to come down with a cold. So take it easy when you hit the gym this cold season. And be sure to bring a workout towel. Regular moderate exercise will be more effective than wearing your body down completely.

Other Ways to Boost Your Immune System

A balanced diet can also help boost immunity. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains and meats can all help you keep up your immunity. When planning your meals it is key to look for foods that contain zinc. Experts also recommend lowering your sugar intake, since viruses survive on it.

Among the fruits and vegetables you should eat on an “immunity diet” are those rich in antioxidants. These include:

  • blueberries
  • broccoli
  • cabbage
  • pomegranates
  • spinach
  • sprouts.

Traditional Chinese medicine also recommends eating plenty of garlic and onions to build up your immunity. Their purported anti-bacterial properties can help fight colds.

Boosting the Immune System With Vitamins

Be sure to get plenty of vitamin B and C, as well. Some people take a multi-vitamin pill when trying to help build up their immune systems to ensure they get plenty of those nutrients.

Maintaining a hydrated body may also help you prevent colds. By drinking plenty of water, you will be able to flush out any toxins that happen to make their way into your body.

What to Avoid to Boost Immunity

If you smoke, you are not helping your immune system at all. In fact, you are adding toxins to your body. The good news: If you quit smoking today, you will see an improvement in your immunity in about a month.

One final way to keep your immune system strong is to manage stress in a healthy manner. Some people do this by exercising, but managing stress can also be accomplished in other ways. Some people meditate, while others just make time for a relaxing hobby or ensure they get plenty of sleep.

Now when you meet one of those people who just never seems to get sick, you will know the secret to their immunity. And with any luck, these strategies can help you avoid the common cold as well.
