Supplements Health

While many of us know that vitamins are essential to staying healthy, fewer are aware of the other supplements that can benefit our health. In fact, our bodies won’t absorb certain vitamins if we don’t also take a particular mineral or supplement.

While traditional health supplements, including magnesium and selenium, have proven health benefits, there are a number of other herbs and minerals that can improve your health. For example, both green tea extract and shark cartilage have been proven to boost the body’s levels of antioxidants and reduce swelling. Over time, taking these health supplements can be effective in preventing certain types of cancer, as well as rheumatoid arthritis, respectively.

Other beneficial health supplements include:

  • aloe vera, for circulatory health
  • cranberry extract, for urinary tract health
  • glucosamine, for joint health
  • fish oil, for brain, joint and digestive health
  • milk thistle, for hormonal health (particularly in menopausal women).

Depending on the type of supplement, you can get these other health supplements in pill or liquid form.

Whether you are just starting to take other health supplements or you are thinking of changing your supplement routine, keep in mind that the types of supplements you need to improve your health depend on a variety of factors, including:

  • age
  • current health status
  • prescription medication you may be taking (Some supplements interfere with prescription medications, causing negative health problems.).

If you are unsure of which types of other health supplements are best for you, talk to your doctor. Your doctor can evaluate your current status and recommend supplements that you should take, as well as some that you should avoid.

In this section, we will lay out a variety of traditional and non-traditional health supplements. Our articles will discuss both the pros and cons of taking such dietary supplements, helping you choose the supplements that are right for you.

Minerals

While many of us know that we need to ingest certain vitamins (such as vitamin A, B and C) to stay in optimum health, fewer of us are aware of the fact that minerals also play a vital role in keeping us healthy. Essential minerals include:

  • calcium
  • iodine
  • potassium
  • selenium
  • zinc.

Thankfully, many multivitamin supplements include the necessary amounts of these essential minerals to maintain our health.

Remember, however, that different people will need to take more or less of particular minerals, depending on their current condition. For example, a menopausal woman should increase her calcium intake to prevent osteoporosis. If you are unsure of which types of minerals to take more of, talk to your doctor about the health benefits of minerals.

Herbs

Although Eastern medicine has purported the essential role of herbs in maintaining our overall health for centuries, herbs are starting to come into mainstream Western medicine more than ever before. Some of the herbs that are beneficial to our health include:

  • flax seed oil
  • green tea oil
  • milk thistle
  • licorice root
  • peppermint oil.

Depending on your needs, you can take herbs for anything ranging from menopause symptom relief to urinary tract health. Before starting any herb regimen, talk to your doctor about the best herbs for you.
