Osteoporosis is the medical term for a condition characterized by bone fragility, pain, fracture, disability, and death associated with fracture complications.

People tend to think of osteoporosis as an issue of women’s health; however, it is not an exclusively female condition. Although the condition is more frequent among women, with one in three women over the age of fifty developing osteoporosis, up to one in twelve men will also be affected.

Osteoporosis is one of the most preventable bone diseases. Thanks to years of research, scientists have discovered many of the underlying causes of osteoporosis and some of the steps that can be taken to prevent the disease and avoid its potentially serious complications, such as bone fractures.

The search for a definitive osteoporosis cure is still underway. Meanwhile, awareness of risk factors and adopting proactive lifestyle changes, including proper nutrition, exercise, and possibly hormone supplementation can help prevent the onset of osteoporosis.
