Pain can be defined as an uneasy or unpleasant sensation you feel in your body. It can range from mild to severe, causing stress to your body and mind. You can manage and treat pain—both short- and long-term—in several ways, which often involve medication. Since the mind plays a crucial role in how your body handles pain, self-hypnosis for pain management is another effective way to get relief.

Self-Hypnosis for Pain and the Brain

Self-hypnosis for pain management may be more beneficial for you than you may realize. Self-hypnosis encourages you to physically and relax, focus your attention and, in some cases, alter your way of thinking.

Pain is ultimately processed and perceived in your brain. Pain receptors and nerves in your body send pain signals to your spinal cord and brain, which then interprets these signals. Sometimes emotional and psychological issues can cause your brain to interpret signals as a sensation of pain, even when no physical injury is present.

Your brain and its psychological and emotional processes can affect your personal experience of pain. In fact, how your interpretation and toleration of pain may be affected by your physical, emotional and psychological state, memories of past pain and even your beliefs and values.

Self-hypnosis can help to alter the perception and interpretation of pain signals.

Practicing Self-Hypnosis for Pain Management

Pain relief hypnosis may distract you from the pain you may feel as you practice guided imagery. You can practice self-hypnosis for pain management in the comfort of your home or outside in nature.

One way to practice pain relief hypnosis is by lying down or sitting comfortably in a peaceful setting. Focus your gaze on something around you, such as a tree or candle. Use self-hypnosis induction techniques: Count backwards from ten to one or envision yourself descending a flight of stairs.

Alternatively, you can close your eyes and imagine something in front of you on which you can focus your attention. Take deep breaths and clear your mind of thought by giving your complete attention to the image you see; your mind will start to distract from the pain you feel.

Traditional Medicine and Self-Hypnosis

Self-hypnosis for pain should only be used as treatment after you’ve spoken with your doctor and received a medical diagnosis. Some forms of pain may be more serious than others, indicating a health problem. Your doctor can tell you whether self-hypnosis for pain is right for you.
