Cosmetic Surgery Rhinoplasty Nose Adjustment

Rhinoplasty, which is also known as nose surgery, nose reshaping or a “nose job,” is one of the most popular cosmetic plastic surgeries in the United States. People elect to have nose surgery for a number of different reasons.

In some cases, nose surgery is used to correct medical conditions, such as a deviated septum or other nose problems. A septum is the wall inside your nasal cavity that divides your nose in half. A deviated septum occurs when the septum is not in the exact middle of the nasal cavity, causing difficulty breathing in one or both sides of the nose.

In some cases, a deviated septum can be corrected using septoplasty, a surgical procedure that adjusts the septum and puts it back into place. Septoplasty is an entirely internal procedure, meaning that it does not usually alter the overall appearance of the nose. Septoplasty, also known as nasal septal reconstruction, can be done alone or in conjunction with rhinoplasty, which does alter the outer appearance of the nose.

A nose job can be used to alter the appearance of the nose in many different ways. Nose surgery or nose re-contouring can adjust:

  • bent noses
  • deformed noses
  • facial symmetry
  • flat noses
  • high noses
  • large noses
  • long noses
  • narrow noses
  • short noses
  • unattractively shaped noses
  • wide noses.

Rhinoplasty makes changes by:

  • changing the angle between the nose and upper lip
  • changing the shape of the tip or bridge of the nose
  • decreasing or increasing the size of the nose
  • narrowing the span of the nose’s nostrils.

The best candidates for nose surgery are people who are in good health and are simply looking to enhance their own appearance and self-esteem. Patients should be mentally stable and over the age of 18.

Also, it’s important that people only get rhinoplasty under realistic expectations. Nose surgery can work to enhance the positive features of a face, but it cannot adjust all of a person’s features.

Those considering having rhinoplasty done should talk first to their regular doctor and then to a recommended plastic surgeon. A plastic surgeon can show you photos of what a nose surgery could do for you, as well as explain the procedure and its effects.

The Best Nose Surgery Candidates

The most common reasons people choose to get nose surgery are to increase their self-esteem and self-confidence and to improve their looks.

Some people have unrealistic expectations for nose surgery. The following cannot usually be achieved through nose surgery alone and would be considered unrealistic expectations:

  • thinking people will treat you differently if your nose looks different
  • thinking you can achieve perfection through nose surgery
  • thinking your whole appearance will change if your nose is altered.

Many of these expectations are typical of younger patients. While teenagers can undergo cosmetic procedures, they may not be emotionally ready to deal with the outcome and consequences of such a serious and life-changing decision.
